Each of Can’s former singers had joined the group in serendipitous circumstances. On the second live date of the new year, merely ten days into 1976, this pattern appeared about to repeat itself. In Brussels, at the Ancienne Belgique theatre, they fell in with a young singer of Malaysian origin named Thaiga Raj Raja Ratnam. He stepped up to join Can on three songs that night, and again at Grenoble (16 January) and Lyon (17), where he made a fumbling intermission announcement in French and elicited jeers and wolf whistles when he returned to sing ‘One More Night’. Undeterred, he joined Can again for a further string of French concerts in early March: at Bordeaux (2 March), Poitiers (3) and Laval (4). At Poitiers, they trialled a track known at the time as ‘Goose Egg’, an embryonic version of what would become ‘I Want More’. Ratnam actually pulled out a convincing Damo-style screech-fest during an improv version of ‘Bel Air’ that veered into fast thrash territory, but it wasn’t sustained. When it became clear that Thaiga could not burn bright enough to compete with Can’s fearful symmetry, he bowed out. Irmin’s verdict: ‘It didn’t work. It had no bite, no real character.’
